Introduction
Semi-Professional Course 2, “ Advanced studio lighting for Products” is the second course in the semi professional level of programs offered by the Creative Institute of Australia (CIA). Participants undertaking this course will have successfully completed the minimum requirements of Intermediate Course 2 or are able to demonstrate sufficient past training or experience  to cope with the Course content.  

Aim
The Course aims to consolidate and build on the knowledge and skills acquired through the Intermediate level of studies and thus progress participants toward semi or fully professional standards.  “Advanced studio lighting for Products” is a series of workshops concentrating on the technical requirements of quality product lighting and the skills, techniques/manipulations used to create high quality images. Participants will experiment with their creative vision and learn how controlled lighting defines the achievement of quality of products for visual presentation.

This course is essential for those wishing to explore and challenge their technical proficiency in product photography. It is also a core foundation for individuals wishing to begin their transition into the professional photographic community and recruit professional product assignments.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this Course participants will be able to:

  • Complete successful product  assignments utilising a range of materials
  • Interpret studio images and comment accurately on their composition
  • Communicate creatively and process ideas and projects
  • Effectively organise a studio product session from design to end product 
  • Interpret their own creative direction, strengths and vision
  • Perform intermediate level creative lighting set ups.
  • Combine technical competence with creative maturity in the product arena
  • Discuss accurately and advise subjects on final image outcomes
  • Debate the physical effects of colour and or, monochrome in their images
  • Feel comfortable and familiar within a studio environment and be able to make effective decisions and calculations to achieve quality output.

Teaching Strategies
Course 2 is delivered through a series of 6 x 3hr 6:30pm – 9:30pm workshop lessons supported by visual aids and demonstrations.  A typical class will consist of discussion of techniques, followed by a practical student participation workshop.  This workshop will deal with evolving techniques and experimenting with new lighting designs. 

This course concludes with a 6 hr  10am-4pm  Saturday workshop in practical product photography.  Participants will be encouraged to form teams to jointly hire studio space and lighting equipment to further practise during this Course.

Specialist Facilities and Equipment
The Course is delivered in a professional photographic studio. The tutor will present new material using visual aids and demonstrations through digital camera hardware and/ or utilising a laptop connected to a digital projector. 

Participants Equipment Requirements
Each participant will need to have their own 35mm DSLR camera, lenses light meter, sync cord/radio slave. They will also be required to recruit their own subjects for the allocated assignment and projects. Throughout this course participants will also need to hire studio space and lighting equipment. It is preferable for student to form teams and arrange these hires on a joint basis.

Assessment
Assessment will be conducted by way of tutor observation. Participants will be required to discuss lighting and projects accurately and provide solutions to product assignments.  They will also be challenged though a series of simulation exercises and will need to accurately complete, to the required standard, a range of studio products briefs.

Entry Requirements
Participants must have successfully competed intermediate level courses ”. New participants may apply to the Institute for exemption by completing the application for RPL.
