Introduction
Semi Professional Course 1, “Studio lighting for Portraiture” is the first course in the semi professional level of programs offered by the Creative Institute of Australia (CIA). Participants undertaking this Course will have successfully completed the minimum requirement of Intermediate Course 2 or have been able to demonstrate a level of past training or experience sufficient to cope with this Course’s content.

Aim
The Course aims to build on the successful completion of intermediate studies and progress participants toward semi, or fully professional standards.  “Studio lighting for Portraiture” advances on natural light portrait studies progressing into the studio environment and controlled lighting conditions. Participants will experiment with their creative vision and begin to develop their unique style of the studio portrait craft. Participants will learn how controlled lighting sculpts the studio portrait.  They will begin to make successful studio portrait images in a range of genres including classical, contemporary, fashion, environmental and narrative.

This Course is essential for individuals wishing to explore and challenge their studio portrait craft.  It is a needed foundation for participants wanting to recruit professional portrait assignments and begin their journey into the professional community. Fashion, Wedding and Executive portraiture is explored and discourse is encouraged between the class and the tutors. In addition to class tutorials and workshops, industry guest speakers will deliver a series of seminars.

Learning Outcomes
At the successful completion of this Course participants will be able to:

  • Complete successful studio portrait assignments from a range of genres
  • Interpret studio images and comment accurately on their composition
  • Communicate creatively and process ideas and projects
  • Effectively organise a studio portrait session from design to end product 
  • Interpret their own creative direction, strengths and vision
  • Perform intermediate level creative lighting set ups.
  • Combine technical competence with creative maturity in the portrait arena
  • Discuss accurately and advise subjects on final image outcomes
  • Debate the physical effects of colour and or monochrome in their images
  • Feel comfortable and be familiar within a studio environment and be able to make effective decisions and calculations for quality output.

Semi Professional – Course 1 – Lesson Content/Timetable
Week 1: The Studio Portrait
Week 2: Practical  shoot Traditional, Contemporary, Environmental &  Artistic Portraiture
Week 3: Practical shoot Advanced Studio Light Metering & Advanced Light Ratio Techniques
Week 4: Practical shoot Studio Lighting for Males and Females
Week 5: Practical shoot Studio Lighting for Couples and Groups
Week 6 : Practical shoot Studio Lighting for Fashion & Saturday Practical workshop

Teaching Strategies
The course is delivered through a series of 6 x 3hr 6:30pm – 9:30pm mix of lecture, tutorial and workshop lessons supported by visual aids and assignment critique.  A typical class will consist of open critique of assignment work and discussion of techniques.  This is followed by a practical student participation workshop, dealing with evolving techniques and experimenting with new lighting designs.  Each week participants will need to undertake pre allocated practical assignment work including experimental projects. 

The Course will conclude with a full 6 hr Saturday workshop of practical photography between 10am & 4pm.  Participants are encouraged to begin hiring studio space in teams to further their practise within this course. 

Specialist Facilities and Equipment
This course is delivered in a professional photographic studio. The tutor will present new material using visual aids and demonstrations through digital camera hardware.

Participants Equipment Requirements

Each participant will need to have their own 35mm DSLR camera, lenses light meter, sync cord/radio slave. They will also be required to recruit their own subjects for the allocated assignment and projects. Throughout this course participants will also need to hire studio space and lighting equipment. It is preferable for student to form teams and arrange these hires on a joint basis.

Assessment
Assessment will be conducted by way of tutor observation and presentation of weekly assignments. Participants will be required to discuss lighting and portrait projects accurately and provide solutions to portrait assignments.  They will be challenged though a series of simulation exercises and be required to accurately complete, to the required standard, a range of studio portrait briefs. Participants  will also be required to make a short presentation on a portrait photographer of their choice and discuss his/her style and influence.

Entry Requirements
Students must have successfully competed intermediate level courses ”. New students may apply to the Institute for exemption by completing the application for RPL.
