Introduction
This unit is the 5th unit in the sequence of 4 professional photography units within the distance education program. Participants undertaking this unit will have successfully completed the requirements of prior knowledge to undertake this course. This unit is designed to assist the participants with setting up their photography business and begin recruiting commercial assignments. Business plans, financing, marketing and effective communication strategies are explored. Participants are tutored in advertising their business, industry associations and pricing of their product. Copyright and integrity of your work is examined in the ever changing digital environments. Participants will gain valuable knowledge regarding contracts, term and conditions of supply, taxation and how to present their folio work and sell their services.
Learning Outcomes
At the successful completion of this unit participants will be able to:

- Understand taxation, copyright, contracts and financing for now and future growth.
- Understand effective advertising campaigns and consumer behaviour.
- Create effective communication strategies and sales techniques to ensure conversion rates.
- Understand market trends, industry guilds and networking opportunities to assist their progress.

- Lesson 1: Creating a business plan.
- Lesson 2: Identifying the addressable market and creating a marketing plan.
- Lesson 3: Strategic communication and networking.
- Lesson 4: Copyright, contracts and basic business law.
- Lesson 5: Consumer behaviour, advertising campaigns – who is your audience.
- Lesson 6: Pricing, presentation, industry guilds and sales techniques in a competitive market.

Each lesson is fully illustrated with comprehensive notes and assignments. Students have access to their own tutor online and by phone for feedback and consultation. The course is excellent for skilled photographers ready to begin their own business. Students are required to complete assignments that are relevant to the tutorial brief. Each assignment is mentored by your tutor and feedback and progress reports are forwarded at the completion of each lesson.
Delivery
- Each lesson is delivered to you through the post with comprehensive notes, illustrations and assignment requirements.
- You work through each lesson in your own time and submit your assignments via email.
- Your online tutor will assess your assignment work and forward you your progress report and the next lesson in sequence.
- You have access to your tutor online and or by phone throughout your course.
- There is no time frame; however CIA recommends that you establish a routine with your lessons and endeavour to complete the unit within a maximum of 6 months.
