Art and Fine Light Photography

Introduction
This is the 4th unit in the sequence of 5 professional photography units within the distance education program. .  Participants undertaking this unit will have successfully completed the requirements of prior knowledge to undertake this course. The objective of this unit is in two parts.  Firstly to introduce students to a framework for ‘reading’ visual images in terms of the social and ideological dimensions and consideration to how it might be read by others.  Images will be examined in terms of the ‘content’ they construct, the relation they establish and their internal organisation.  Theories of the gaze and the practices of looking will be considered with the emphasis that images do not simply reflect the world around us, but actively construct it for us. 

Secondly this unit will explore that basic concepts of the history and theory of art.  The unit will provide an introduction knowledge and appreciation of art history, briefly surveying the Western historical canon, and focusing on twentieth century art and design. The central tenets and aspirations of periods, such as the Renaissance and the Baroque, and movements including the Romanticism, Impressionism, Expressionism, Futurism, Cubism, Constructivism, Dada, Surrealism, Bauhaus, Abstraction, Pop, Minimalism and Postmodernism will be explored.  This unit will encourage the participant to appreciate the historical depth to contemporary visual culture and understand photography’s dynamic relationship to older visual media. 

Learning Outcomes
At the successful completion of this unit participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the basic concepts in semiotics and how texts create meaning.
  • Consider the different factors that influence the way we read images.
  • Discuss the concept of the gaze in relation to media images.
  • Identify the basic tenets of the major periods and movements outlined.
  • Show a basic awareness of the major bodies of thought shaping western art and design, and an understanding of how these ideas influence their own practice.
  • Demonstrate the acquisition of basic skills in visual analysis and research.

Content

  • Lesson 1: An Analysis of signs, signifiers, codes and conventions in visual images
  • Lesson 2: A discover of representational meanings in visual images: denotation & connotation
  • Lesson 3: Compositional meanings in visual images
  • Lesson 4: The gaze and spectatorship
  • Lesson 5: The key tenets of, and artists associated with the most influential periods
  • Lesson 6: Introduction to the study of art history by focusing on the work or art though a number of  case studies.
  • Lesson 7: Consideration of photography’s dynamic relationship to the history of visual media.
  • Lesson 8: Fine lighting, the masters and portfolio

Each lesson is fully illustrated with comprehensive notes and assignments.  Students have access to their own tutor online and by phone for feedback and consultation.   The course is excellent for intermediate skilled photographers who are looking for a professional based program that may continue toward becoming a professional photographer.   This course centres on practical explanations and assignments and students would be expected to devote a minimum of 6hrs of practical shooting time for each lesson.  Students are required to complete assignments that are relevant to the tutorial brief.  Each assignment is critiqued by your tutor and feedback and progress reports are forwarded at the completion of each lesson.

  • Each lesson is delivered to you through the post with comprehensive notes, illustrations and assignment requirements.
  • You work through each lesson in your own time and submit your assignments via email.
  • Your online tutor will assess your assignment work and forward you your progress report and the next lesson in sequence.
  • You have access to your tutor online and or by phone throughout your course.
  • There is no time frame; however CIA recommends that you establish a routine with your lessons and endeavour to complete the unit within a maximum of 6 months.
