Natural Light Portraiture

This is the 2nd unit in a sequence of 5 professional photography units designed for distance education to progress students to a professional standard. This unit is studied in your own time and in your own environment.

This unit is an intensive 8 lesson program designed to capitalise and advance on the natural light and camera operations techniques mastered in unit 1 and begin the complex training in portrait photography using natural light conditions.

Participants will be tutored in the use of window light, bounce flash indoors and outdoors and mixed lighting situations.  Participants will undertake instruction in the nuance of basic posing techniques for the female, male, couples, children and groups. This unit is essential for individuals wishing to gain insight into quality portrait photography and acquire the knowledge and techniques to make successful decisions when creating photographic portraits. 

Learning Outcomes
At the successful completion of this unit participants will be able to:

  • Trouble- shoot a range of natural light photographic situations and complete accurate light metering calculations.
  • Combine camera and photographic lighting techniques to a range of portrait assignments.
  • Develop the knowledge of light quality and direction to natural light portrait assignments.
  • Design images using flash effectively as a secondary light source to enhance images
  • Employ the use of reflectors and subtraction techniques to portrait photography
  • Understand and communicate posing requirements to individuals, couples, groups and children in natural and mixed lighting conditions.
  • Make successful portrait shot selections
  • Discuss and create quality compositionally orientated portrait images.
  • Prepare a successful portrait session

Each lesson is fully illustrated with comprehensive notes and assignments.  Students have access to their own tutor online and by phone for feedback and consultation.   The course is excellent for intermediate skilled photographers who are looking for a professional based program that may continue toward becoming a professional photographer.   This course centres on practical explanations and assignments and students would be expected to devote a minimum of 6hrs of practical shooting time for each lesson.  Students are required to complete assignments that are relevant to the tutorial brief.  Each assignment is critiqued by your tutor and feedback and progress reports are forwarded at the completion of each lesson. 

Delivery

  • Each lesson is delivered to you through the post with comprehensive notes, illustrations and assignment requirements.
  • You work through each lesson in your own time and submit your assignments via email.
  • Your online tutor will assess your assignment work and forward you your progress report and the next lesson in sequence.
  • You have access to your tutor online and or by phone throughout your course.
  • There is no time frame; however CIA recommends that you establish a routine with your lessons and endeavour to complete the unit within a maximum of 6 months.
