Introduction to Creative Imaging - Light & Camera

Introduction
This unit is the 1st in the sequence of 8 photography units in the professional photography program.  In this unit participants will be introduced to the physical equipment used in photography including photographic hardware such as camera systems, recording systems including positive and negative film and digital recording platforms.  Participants will explore natural light, it characteristics and how light is used in combination with their camera, lenses and recording systems to creative images and the effect that differing natural lighting conditions have on the end image production. This unit is essential for beginners and ideal for participants wanting to learn about their camera and how to begin creating images.

Learning Outcomes
At the successful completion of this unit participants will be able to:

  • Categories a range of camera systems from compact, 35mm, medium and large format cameras.
  • Distinguish the electromagnetic spectrum and the visual spectrum and discuss its influences of the photographic process.
  • Discuss natural and some artificial light sources and their effective behaviour upon selected subjects.
  • Distinguish between lens focal lengths, speeds and optical capabilities, understand lens aberration and performance.
  • Have a thorough understanding of exposure and using camera hardware in manual mode
  • Create quality natural light images using a select number of photographic techniques including selective focus, depth of field and shutter speed and aperture manipulation. 
  • The behaviour of light – Light quality and light direction
  • Create images through the use of lens behaviour, f-stop, field of view, converging power and depth of field.

  • Workshop: 1 Day Practical Photographic Workshop       

Teaching Strategies
This unit is delivered through a series of 9 x 3hrs evening 6:30pm – 9:30pm mix of lecture, tutorial and workshop supported by visual aids and assignment critique.  A typical class will be 3hours duration consisting of open critique of assignment work and discussion of techniques, followed by a lecture presenting new material and discussion on the materials practical application including demonstration of functionality.  Participants will be required to undertake pre described practical assignment work including experimental projects each week.  This unit will conclude with a full 6hr Saturday workshop  of practical photography between 10am & 4pm. 

Specialist Facilities and Equipment
This unit will be delivered in a lecture classroom and on pre determined photographic locations. The tutor will present each class using visual aids and demonstrations through digital camera hardware and or laptop connected to a digital projector. 

Participants Equipment Requirements
Each participant will be expected to have their own 35mm DSLR camera and lens.  Dedicated flash units are advisable and a 35mm film body is recommended but not compulsory.  Participants are expected to have email and the ability to transfer their images to a USB or CD for presentation.  Participants may email their progressive work for feedback prior to the following weeks’ critique. CIA recommends either Nikon or Cannon systems however 35mmDSLR can be of any brand suitable to fulfil the requirements of the program.

Assessment
Assessment will be conducted by way of weekly assignments.  Participants will receive weekly assessment reports detailing their progress and a small folio of 5 images will be required at the completion of the unit.  The folio and weekly assignments must be submitted on DVD, CD or USB in RAW format as per the assignment requirements.
