Introduction
Professional Course 4, “Photographic Business Studies” is the fourth and last of the Courses offered at this level.  It is delivered through a series of 6 x 3 hr (6:30pm – 9:30pm) lectures and tutorials.

Aim
The Course aim is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to set up a photography business and to begin recruiting commercial assignments. 

Course Overview
Business plans, financing, marketing and effective communication strategies are explored.  Students are tutored in business advertising, industry Associations and pricing of their products.  Copyright and integrity of work is examined in the ever changing digital environments.  Participants will gain knowledge of contracts, term and conditions of supply, taxation and how to present their folio work to sell their services.

Upon successful completion of this Course participants will be able to:

  • Prepare effective business and marketing plans
  • Understand taxation, copyright, contracts and financing for now and future growth
  • Understand effective advertising and consumer behaviour
  • Develop effective communication strategies and sales techniques to ensure conversion rates.
  • Understand market trends, industry Guilds and networking opportunities.

Professional Course 4 – Content
Course content is as follows:-

  •   Development of a Business Plan.
  •   Identification of the addressable market and creating a plan which appeals to that market
  •   Strategic communication and networking.
  •   Copyright, contracts and basic business law.
  •   Consumer behaviour, advertising campaigns – who is your audience.
  •   Pricing, presentation, industry Guilds and sales techniques in a competitive market.
  •   Tutorial from the school of communication
  •   Presentation of final Business, Plans and Projections – “let’s start trading”

Teaching Strategies
The Course is delivered through a series of 6 x 3 hr ( 6:30pm – 9:30pm) mix of lectures, tutorials and  a workshop.  These activities are supported by visual aids and assignment critique.  A typical class will consist of open critique of assignment work and technique  discussion, followed by a lecture presenting new material and discussion of that material.  Each week students will be required to undertake pre assigned practical work which includes experimental projects.   

Specialist Facilities and Equipment
Professional Course 4 is delivered in a lecture classroom and in a studio environment.  The tutor will utilise the use of digital data projection for visual samples and presentation of new material.

Participants Equipment Requirements
Each participant will be provided with the required stationary required for this Course.

Assessment
Assessment will be conducted by way of examination and presentation, for critique, of the overall Business Plan. The Business Plan is to include marketing, communication and sales.
