Introduction
Course 2 program in Digital Darkroom is the second of two programs offered by the institute. In this program participants will undertake 4 lessons in using Adobe Creative Suite 4 for image manipulation.
Course 2 is essential for beginners to intermediate digital users. It provides an ideal progression from to digital darkroom 1 and enables participants to begin using their digital software for advanced digital manipulations.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit participants will be able to:
- Understand levels, layers and history
- Use the retouching and selection tools within the software environment
- Understand the use of curves and tonality
- Preparing images for output and colour management and profiles
- Understanding layout and modern retouching tools
Course 2 – Syllabus/Timetable
Week One: Menus, Menu bars, Toolbox, Palettes,
Week Two: Marquee tools, Feathering, Anti-aliasing, Lasso tools, Magnetic lasso,
Magic wand, Quick mask, Modifying selections, Cropping tool
Week Three: Layer basics, Layer palette, Layer order, Layer visibility, Moving layers, Merging
layers
Week Four: Colour balance, brightness and contrast, Adjustment Layers, Colour balance,
Brightness and contrast, Photo filter, levels, curves, dodge burn and sponge, blur
and sharpen, Airbrush
Teaching Strategies
Course 2 is delivered through a series of 4 x 3hrs 6:30pm – 9:30pm workshops. A typical class will be of 3 hours duration consisting of open critique of assignment work and discussion of techniques, followed by a workshop presenting new material and discussion on the practical application of materials including demonstrations of functionalities. Each week participants will be required to undertake practical assignment work including experimental projects.
Facilities and Equipment
This Course is delivered in a lecture classroom or studio. The tutor will present to each class using visual aids and demonstrations of digital camera hardware.
Students receive their login for the online LMS where they can upload their profiles, connect and share work with all members of the student community.

Participants Equipment Requirements
Participants will be expected to have their own laptop with licensed Adobe CS4 and the required RAW plug in. Participants are required to bring 100 images created in RAW files to work on during the 4 workshops. A list of requirements will be emailed to each student upon enrolment.
Assessment
Assessment will be conducted through review of weekly assignments. On successful completion of Course 2 , students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion.
Entry Requirements
Successful completion of Course 1 Digital Darkroom. New students may apply to the Institute for exemption by completing the application for RPL.
