Introduction
Course 2 is an extension of the theory, techniques and understanding mastered in Course 1 online.
Course 2 unpacks the complexities of on and off camera flash, the use of reflectors and the combination use of flash and reflectors. It also imparts an advanced understanding of light quality and direction and the practical considerations of using flash and reflectors under differing light conditions. In addition, the student will begin to combine composition and colour theory studies and positioning of the human form.
This Course is ideal for students who have completed Course 1 in the beginner program or for students who have previous introductory training and looking to advance their photographic knowledge and skills.
The course concludes with participants producing a final folio of images for professional critique.
Course 2 is a pre requisite requirement for course 3.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this Course participants will be able to:
- Produce quality images using flash and a secondary and primary light sources
- Utilise the techniques of bounce flash and mixing flash with differing light sources and colour.
- Enhance image quality using flash in combination with reflectors
- Produce a series of images using the practical application of flash with light quality and light direction.
- Understand advanced exposure techniques
- Understand the importance of compositional and subject elements, within an image. Begin ‘reading’ images.
- Understand how to compose human forms within an image frame and the required lighting and exposure techniques which apply.

Lesson One: Flash – exposure, on and off camera and bounce techniques
Lesson Two: Advanced Light Theory and Light Direction

Lesson Four: Positioning of the human form with the frame

Teaching Strategies
Course 2 is delivered through a series of 5 online lesson programs. Each lesson requires the participant to use the material provided and work through the lesson manual, completing the online quizzes to ensure comprehension of the material and submit images for assessment using the online Learning Management System. Participants have access to their online tutor for questions, feedback and assessment. Each lesson participants will need to undertake pre described practical assignment work including experimental projects.
Specialist Facilities and Equipment
Students receive their login for the online LMS www.urcreativeonline.com where they can upload their profiles, connect and share work with all members of the student community and retrieve their course notes and materials, complete their quizzes and join forums and discussion groups.
Participants Equipment Requirements
Participants will be expected to have their own DSLR camera and lens, memory card and associated batteries. A dedicated flash unit, 5in1 reflector, tripod and lens hood.
Students must have access to the internet and appropriate image editing software to size their assignment work for upload. CIA recommends either Nikon or Canon systems but any DSLR camera capable of fulfilling the program requirements can be used.
Note: If you do not already have these you should consider their purchase. CIA staff is more than happy to assist with camera and accessories purchase through a favourable relationship with Sun Studios Australia.
Assessment
Assessment will be conducted through review of lesson assignments and completion of online quizzes. Participants receive critique of assignment work, techniques on improvement and ongoing status reports. The majority of the assessment grade will be formed by the final pieces submitted for folio.
On successful completion of Course 2 , students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion and be invited to enrol for Course 3.
Entry Requirements
Students must have successfully completed course 1, “ Introduction to DSLR Photography”. New students may apply to the Institute for exemption by completing the application for RPL.
