Introduction
Course 2 Introduction to Studio, is the second in the Intermediate level of programs offered by the Creative Institute of Australia (CIA). Participants undertaking this course will have successfully completed the minimum requirement of Beginner course 2 or have been able to demonstrate adequate previous training or experience to cope with the content of this course.
Course 2 aims at introducing participants to quality and professional studio practise. Participants will be tutored in the use of a commercial studio, Occupational Health and Safety issues (OHS), studio flash heads and the characteristics of light modifying attachments. These attachments include, soft boxes, umbrellas, scrims, snoots, grids, honeycomb and their associated flash attachments. Participants will also undertake instruction in studio flash metering techniques, the creation of high, mid and low key effects and the rendering of light quality through the use of the modifying attachments.
Intermediate Course 2, is essential for those wishing to gain insight into commercial studio practice, the establishment of their own studio or wish to undertake employment in an assisting role with professional studio photographers. This course is a pre requisite for CIA’s semi professional level programs.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this Course participants will be able to:
- Complete accurate light metering calculations for controlled instant light sources.
- Accurately identify studio lighting equipment and handle equipment correctly.
- Identify , communicate and implement OHS requirements in the studio environment.
- Manage studio maintenance requirements.
- Effectively organise a professional photography studio and catalogue equipment.
- Discuss controlled lighting requirements for a range of studio photographic assignments.
- Use studio flash attachments, making accurate exposures on a range of subject matter.
- Discuss light quality and direction in controlled lighting condition.
- Interpret studio lighting hardware and its effective behaviour on photographic appearance.
- Prepare a successful studio photographic session.
Course Syllabus/Timetable
Week 1: The studio environment – know you way around a studio, sets and studio design
Week 2: OHS within the studio environment, introduction to portable flash units
Week 3: Light modifying attachments – Soft boxes, umbrellas, snoots, scrims, honeycombs etc.
Week 4: Studio light metering and directional techniques
Week 5: High, Mid and Low key studio lighting techniques
Week 6 : Light quality & light direction in 3, 4 & 5 point lighting combinations
Teaching Strategies
The Course is delivered through a series of 6 x 3hr 6:30pm – 9:30pm mix of lecture, tutorial and workshop, lessons. A typical class will consist of practical demonstration, hands on practical applications and reviews. Participants will need to undertake pre described practical work including lighting set ups, identification and take downs.
Specialist Facilities and Equipment
This unit will be delivered in a professional photographic studio. The tutor will present each class in a practical “hands on” environment and participants will be expected to participate in group exercises.
Equipment Requirements
Participants will need to have their own DSLR camera, lens and light meter.
Assessment
Assessment will be conducted by way of course exam and tutor observation assessment. Participants will be required to identify studio equipment and demonstrate their knowledge in handling, maintaining and light metering techniques. Participants will be challenged though a series of simulation exercises and be required to accurately complete the lighting set up brief to the required standard.
Entry Requirements
Students must have successfully completed beginner level 2 course. New students may apply to the Institute for exemption by completing the application for RPL.
