Introduction
Course 2 is an extension of the theory, techniques and understanding mastered in Course 1.
Course 2 provides participants with the opportunity to undertake further practical shooting classes and unpacks the complexities of composition the use of reflectors and shooting at dusk and night. It also imparts an advanced understanding of light quality and direction and the practical considerations of reflectors under differing light conditions. In addition, the participant will begin to combine composition and design principles to their studies.
This Course is ideal for students who have completed Course 1 in the beginner program or for students who have previous introductory training and looking to advance their photographic knowledge and skills.
The course concludes with a review and an evening professional image critique.
Course 2 is a pre requisite requirement for the Intermediate level programs.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this Course participants will be able to:
- Produce quality images using multiple exposure techniques
- Utilise the techniques of bouncing light from reflectors and light diffusion techniques
- Enhance image quality through the understanding of light theory and direction
- Produce a series properly exposed images at night, using blur and light painting techniques
- Understand advanced exposure techniques
- Understand the importance of compositional and subject elements, within an image.
Begin ‘reading’ images.
Course 2 – Syllabus/Content
Week One: Light Theory and Direction
Week Two: Practical lesson on light theory and direction in the studio
Week Three: Composition and design principles
Week Four: City night practical class shoot
Week Five: Review and Presentation of images
Teaching Strategies
Course 2 is delivered through a series of 5 x 3hr 6:30pm – 9:30pm mix of lectures and practical classes supported by visual aids, quality course notes and assignment critique. In week 4 students will participate in a practical shooting night workshop. This workshop includes working with a female model.
A typical class will include open critique of assignment work, discussion of techniques and practical exercises. Each week, participants will need to undertake pre described practical assignment work including experimental projects.
Specialist Facilities and Equipment
This course is delivered in a photographic studio and at pre determined photographic locations. The tutor will present to each class using visual aids. Students receive their login for the online LMS where they can upload their profiles, connect and share work with all members of the student community and retrieve their course notes and materials. Participants Equipment Requirements
Participant will need to have :-
- DSLR camera and lens, 5in1 reflector, tripod and lens hood, memory card
- CIA recommends either Nikon or Canon systems but any brand DSLR camera capable of meeting the course requirements, may be used.
Note: If you do not already have these extra items you should consider their purchase. CIA staff are more than happy to assist with camera and accessory purchase through our favourable purchasing arrangement with Sun Studios Australia.
Assessment
Assessment will be conducted by way of weekly assignments. Upon successful completion of course 2, students will receive a certificate and be invited to enrol for intermediate Course programs.
Entry Requirements
Students must have successfully completed course 1, “ Introduction to DSLR Photography”. New students may apply to the Institute for exemption by completing the application for RPL.
