Introduction
Course 1 program is the first in the sequence of programs offered by the institute.  In this program participants will be introduced to the physical equipment used in DSLR photography, how to operate their camera system manually and will explore the benefits of their investment is a digital SLR camera. Participants will undertake lessons in lens focal length and characteristics, exposure techniques, camera functions, menus and histograms.  The participant will be introduced to natural light, its characteristics and how light is used in combination with their camera, lenses and recording systems to create well exposed and sharp images.

Course 1 is essential for beginners.  It provides an ideal introduction to photography and enables participants to begin using their camera hardware for creative imaging making.

Course 1 is a pre requisite requirement for Course 2.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit participants will be able to:

  • Categorise a range of DSLR camera functions and understand the camera menu.
  • Understand the different effects and uses of the range of exposure options.
  • Make educated choices on ISO, aperture and shutter speed combinations
  • Distinguish between lens focal lengths, speeds and optical capabilities.
  • Have an understanding of exposure and using camera hardware in manual mode
  • Create natural light images using a select number of photographic techniques including selective focus, depth of field, shutter speed and aperture manipulation. 
  • Have a basic understanding of the behaviour of light – Light quality and light direction.  

Course 1 – Syllabus/Timetable
Week One:         Introducing the camera, functions, menu and exposure
Week Two:         ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed – working in manual
Week Three:      Lenses and Lens characteristics
Week Four:        Metering techniques
Week Five:         Practical Class and Review of Techniques  

Teaching Strategies

Course 1 is delivered through a series of 5 x 3hrs 6:30pm – 9:30pm mix of lecture and practical classes supported by visual aids, quality course notes and assignment critique.  A typical class will be of 3 hours duration consisting of open critique of assignment work and discussion of techniques, followed by a lecture presenting new material and discussion on the practical application of  materials including demonstrations of functionalities.  The final class in week 5 will be a practical class and review of techniques acquired during this course. Each week participants will be required to undertake practical assignment work including experimental projects. 

Facilities and Equipment
This Course is delivered in a lecture classroom or studio and at pre determined photographic locations. The tutor will present to each class using visual aids and demonstrations of digital camera hardware.
Students receive their login for the online LMS where they can upload their profiles, connect and share work with all members of the student community and retrieve their course notes and materials. Timetables, upcoming events and forums are available at the LMS www.urcreativeonline.com

Participants Equipment Requirements
Participants will be expected to have their own DSLR camera and lens, memory card and associated batteries and a USB for image transfer. CIA recommends either Nikon or Canon systems but any DSLR camera capable of fulfilling the program requirements can be used.
Note: A tripod and lens hood is recommended.  If you do not already have these you should consider their purchase.  CIA staff is more than happy to assist with camera and accessories purchase through a favourable relationship with Sun Studios Australia.

Assessment
Assessment will be conducted through review of weekly assignments.  On successful completion of Course 1 , students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion and be invited to enrol for Course 2.
